TOMMY WATERS ISSUES STATEMENT ON HAWAIʻI SUPREME COURT DECISION REGARDING DISTRICT IV ELECTION
Tommy Waters today issued the following statement in response to the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court’s decision affirming the Circuit Court ruling regarding his eligibility in the District IV election:
“While I am profoundly disappointed by today’s decision, I am grateful to the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court and its justices for acting expeditiously and providing much-needed certainty to the voters of District IV. While the outcome is difficult, our system of democracy depends on respect for the rule of law and for the judicial process that brought us here.
More than anything, I want to thank the people of District IV. To every resident who placed their trust in me, every volunteer who gave their time, every neighbor who opened their door, made a phone call, displayed a sign, offered an encouraging word, or simply believed that I could continue serving our community: mahalo. Your support has meant more to me and my family than I can ever fully express.
The opportunity you gave me to serve and represent District IV has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I have never taken that responsibility lightly. Every conversation with a parent worried about whether their children can afford to remain in Hawaiʻi, every kūpuna concerned about safety and the cost of living, and every young person hoping to build a future here has strengthened my resolve to fight for a more livable, sustainable, and compassionate Honolulu.
Like many of you, I come from humble beginnings. As a father of two young adults, I know how deeply families feel the uncertainty of this moment and the fear that our children may not have the same opportunity to remain, work, raise families, and thrive in the place we love. That is why public service has always been more than a title or a position to me. It has been a kuleana—a responsibility to give back, to listen, and to work every day for the people who trusted me with their voice.
Although this decision closes one chapter, it does not diminish the work we have done together or the values that brought us together. Our community’s hopes for safe neighborhoods, housing people can afford, protected natural resources, and a Honolulu where future generations can stay and thrive remain worth fighting for.
I am deeply grateful that District IV allowed me the opportunity to serve. I will carry the lessons, relationships, and trust of this community with me always. And while today is difficult, I remain committed to Honolulu, to the people of District IV, and to the belief that public service must always begin and end with the people.
